Rebecca Kohler Baby Quilt - Circa 1832

|

Pattern Information: This quilt is a traced modification of the original Cradle Quilt made in 1832 by Rebecca Kohler for her son Jacob. Rebecca was from Berks County, Pennsylvania and the quilt was donated to the State Museum of Pennsylvania.
I had made
a trip to Harrisburg and contacted the museum regarding their Fraktur
collection; during this time I met with Beatrice Hulsberg, the acting
director of Community and Domestic Life. Beatrice indicated that
the museum had a lovely collection of quilts and thought I might
be interested in looking at the documentation. WOULD I? When I spotted
this particular quilt I was thrilled and asked to replicate it.
The Director of the Museum and the board agreed to give me permission
and off I went to do the tracing. THAT'S ANOTHER STORY. Unfortunately
there is very little information about Rebecca, but I think she
did a fine job. The quilt is done in the exact colors as the original
with mostly historical fabrics as close as I could get them.
The museum will benefit from the sale of the quilt patterns after
all costs have been met for the pattern making, photos, etc. The
State Museum of PA, Harrisburg, PA benefits from the sale of The
Wickersham Book, Rebecca Kohler Baby Quilt and The Chester County
Medallion Patterns with proceeds going to assist with the preservation
of their Textile Collection.

The Wickersham Quilt Circa 1854

|
Pattern Information: This Applique' Album Quilt is housed in a private collection from The State Museum of Pennsylvania. It was traced and the quilting stitches recorded in order to replicate it in time to celebrate the Musuem's 100th Year anniversary in 2005.
*The inscription on the center block reads "John Wickersham was born Dec.
1780 died 22 Feb 1853" Next to it is a block which says, "Rebecca
Wickersham was born the 6th day of the 3rd month 1791. It is likely that
Rebecca made the quilt as a memorial to her husband. Of the 57 signers
of the quilt 39 have been identified; all of them resided in northern
York County in 1850 and most were related to the Wickersham family.
This splendid quilt, in which each block is a different design, is a
Pennsylvania interpretation of the Baltimore Album.
Without the help of a wonderful group of women associated with The
Memphis Applique Society ,and many talented "Dear Jane" ladies so dear to
me...this quilt would not be completed in time. You will find their
names listed and the blocks they appliqued in my book. A very special
thanks to them and to the dearest lady in Goshen, Indiana, Mary Helmuth.
Mary did the marvelous hand quilting, according to the orginally traced
quilted stitches.
The quilt and all the patterns are part of the
Wickersham Signature Quilt Book
